NYLON Indonesia Magazine Re-design

Nylon is fashion magazine that well known in many countries. The target market of the magazine is class B-A teenagers. Nylon is unique and edgy magazine, they mix fashion with pop alternative music.

Initial Reaction
When I first read Nylon Magazine, I think Nylon is  a magazine that focused on the fashion. So there are not many information about celebrity. I have some difficulties to read it because the sub head or headline placing.

Content
I think the content is fit with the concept. Because the content show teenagers high fashion that love to mix and match cloths and cosmetic product that fit with the teenagers style. But I think the body text is too much for teenagers, because most of teenagers love seeing pictures and images.

Aesthetic
Nylon Indonesia is actually really fun with their elements. But I think the placing is not right. That’s make it uncomfortable and confuse to read.

Style
Nylon’s style is really unique, edgy, and fun. How they’re placing the page number is fun and different from other magazine. The look and feel is youthful and playful.

Layout
I think the layout is really fun, but somehow look messy and disturbing. So it’s difficult to reader to read it. I think it’s because of the placing is too playfull.

Flow
I think Nylon Magazine’s content flow really well. Even the article and the print advertising have the same topic and look in one spread.

Typography
 Nylon used varieties typography. I think the typography is appropriate, but the placing is not maintain really well.

Color

The colors basic is bright and playfull. I think it’s fit with the target market of this magazine, teenagers.

Completeness
I think if there are some article about how celebrity nowadays dress up, or the solution / how to dress up that fit our varieties body shape. I will be helpful and interesting.

Audience
The audiences are around 15 - 23 years old.
This age group still love to match the colors.
I think it will be a good reponds.

Details
Some of the graphic element is really strong , that makes the content not really outstanding. Because of the element and content  became too crowded, it become uncomfortable to read.

Problem Areas
The main problem is the placing of the headline, subhead, the graphic element, images and body text to make it comfortable to read.

Appeal
The cover is actually have a good hierarchy and the colors also attractive and match. The photograph background is black and white, so it’s not collide with the headline.

Context & Communication Area
Their concept is really strong and differernt from other fashion magazines. But there are some parts that still need to be fixed.

Solution
The solution is to arrange the placing of the headline, subhead, the graphic element, images and body text. But not remove the playful and quirky style.

Background
The design of the magazine was intended to be "hyper-legible. Nylon is licensed magazine in NY, US, and has already be in the market since 1999.. Nylon is an American magazine that focuses on pop culture and fashion. Its coverage includes art, beauty, music, design, celebrities, technology and travel.


03 . DRIVERS

Our goal in this project is to fix and develope better design and layout, especially on sub-heads, images, element graphic and text placing and hierarchy. So it will be more comfortable to reader tor read.


04 . AUDIENCE

Primary
Young Adult
Between the age of 18 - 25 years old
Especially female college educated who have interest in fashion or learn about fashion design and trend.

Secondary
Adult
Between the age of 26 - 34 years old
Female employed or single that pay attention in fashion trend and beauty.


5 . COMPETITORS

A. Girlfriend

Strenght
Young and fun teenage look and feel fit with the audience, have high qualities photos.


Weakness
Bad colours combinations, too crowded & Typeface choices are not really fit.

Opportunity
Some people have interest in the current trend, celebrity and lifestyle.

Threat
Well known and well design others magazine with the same topic and target audience.

B. LOOKS

Strenght
Haas many pictures , fast celebrity gossips / informations. The size of magazine is comfortable to hold and read.

Weakness
Messy Layout, pictures & text placement.

Opportunity
Some people have interest in the current trend, celebrity and gossip.

Threat
Well known and well design others magazine with the same topic and target audience.

The designed has to reflect on the characteristic on Nylon Indonesia which are :
   Quirky
   Music
   Artistic
   Sophisticated



7. MESSAGES
   NYLON Indonesia delivers current trend in fashion, music, art, design, musics, culture, health, and lifestyle with unique style of layout and design.


8 . VISUALS

The design can be explored with nice and unique style of layouts and illustration. With high quality of photographs and playful typography. Because Nylon also have art pop culture concept and it will attract many young people.

Limitation / Restriction
The magazine could not include or has any disscusion that can provoke a misunderstanding, misleading information nor inappropriate content and words. Could not use fancy paper because of the budget.

10 . REPORT

This project is going to actualized under the supervision & agrement of of the client, NYLON Magazine Indonesia and the Creative Director , Ms. Utari Syaukat.

After quality control with my lecture, and got feedbacks from my peers, I use Franklin Gothic Book, Bariol, Avenir and Letter Gothic STD for body copy and intro / kicker.




Because it's an asian issues edition. I use asian typography and brushes. these are the asian typography choices for headlines, page numbering and folio :
